Because of the above mentioned issues, I got up late, not like four hours late, but I hit the gym about 30 minutes later than I had wanted to. I knew the minute I saw it that today’s workout was gonna be a party, I just wasn’t sure what kind of party, and even now I’m not really sure. After a quick spin on the bike I started the kettlebell swings and sit-ups, oh for the love, more damn sit-ups! Actually the worse part of this section of my workout is the fact our gym’s kettlebell selection is just sad, the largest one we have is only 30 pounds, I need like a 50 pounder. The only issue I had here was my shoulder seems to also be tired and cranky today.
On to the bench and leg press. Once upon a time (like 22 years ago) I was a machine on the bench press. I would routinely do sets of ten with 175lbs and could max well over 200lbs. These days are a little different. My workout said “select a weight that doesn't cause pain to shoulder” yea, well the bar alone causes pain to the shoulder today, which just aggravated the hell out of me. How did I handle this aggravation? I threw on 95lbs for three sets of twelve. The first set nearly brought me to tears, my shoulder screamed, but Doc has assured me I cannot damage my shoulder. I debated reducing the weight and then just got flat out angry about it and slammed out the next two sets.
Between bench sets I had leg press. I haven’t done leg press since I played football in ’05, so I really had no idea what weight to start with. The sticker on the machine says the starting weight is 118lbs, that’s not enough. Clearly I can handle well over 200lbs simply based on my own weight. Having said that, I really did not want to blow out my knees, so I decided to play it safe and start out pretty light, 208lbs. Yea, that was pretty easy. So I jumped up to 298lbs, which felt better, but still a little light. The last set I did at 328lbs and that felt pretty good, but next time I’ll push it a little more.
At this point I felt pretty good, that was all about to change! I had a very similar rowing workout to the one I had Saturday, you know, the one I loved so much. Yea well KB added a twist to it today. The rowing distances were the same, but this time I had a given number of squats between sets. In addition I had my rowing times for Saturday and in keeping with MK’s challenge I wanted to beat my previous times. The first two sets went ok, then it was like a I slammed face first into a wall. Holy crap! There was an all-out mutiny between my body and my brain. My brain sent out messages of encouragement, like, “you can totally do this, look at what you’ve done already; you’re almost done, etc.” My body on the other hand was using language that I will not repeat here! In the end I think I finished the workout simply because I can be unbelievably stubborn and bull headed. Regardless of how I got through it, I got through it.
I was pretty pleased as I shuffled to the locker room to get my stuff, right up until I looked at a clock. Holy crap, I was gonna be late to work. I’d like to say I ran to my Jeep, but that would be a total lie, I went as fast as I could, which I’m sure resembled something close to a zombie shuffle. I managed to get to work, grab a shower and be at my desk and I was only five minutes late. All-in-all a win!
