The End of 2016:
Disney: The Mom and I did our annual trip to the Disney Wine & Dine, mom crushed the 5k event and I pulled out of the ½ marathon due to my hip, and the fact that after Chatty and IMPH, I just had no desire to do another sporting event…ever!
Alaska: I had a business trip to Alaska and was lucky enough to have both The Mom and one of my brothers JK go with me. While both JK and I had to work most of the time, it was an incredible trip! We stayed an extra day and were able to do some sigh seeing, hiked a glacier, saw Denali, it was great!
While on this trip, I would get a call from a friend about a new job opportunity. I had been with the same company for 18.5 years, but the offer was intriguing enough for me to consider it. More on this later.
The Holidays – a fall, a surgery, a wedding and a dance. Please note that The Mom was involved in the above listed events. In late October, she tripped over her new puppy and fell. At the time, there was some concern about her shoulder, but it calmed down and the adventures continued. She had a little pain in her hip, but nothing serious…until it was. On Christmas day (yup…a full two months after her fall), she was having a hard time just standing. Two days after Christmas, I was concerned enough to place a call to my BFFs hubby, TK (orthopedic surgeon). I gave him the run down and he told me that I needed to take The Mom to the ER, she had a broken hip (the man has mad skills). So off to the ER we went, where they confirmed his diagnosis. She was admitted and the following morning TK put three pins in The Mom’s hip. Now, my brother was getting married on New Year’s Eve, there was no way The Mom would miss that. Not only was she there, she danced with the groom at the reception, a slow dance, but a dance none the less! Yup, my mom’s a total badass!
That closed out 2016, but 2017 picked up right where 16 left off!!!
The Job: Remember the job opportunity I mentioned? It required a trip out to Tucson AZ, so the first weekend in January, I headed out west. In keeping with the chaos that is my day to day life, while I was gone, mom had issues with her hip and my oldest golden suffered a spinal injury. I’m not sure I’ve ever been so stressed on the road, I didn’t eat, I didn’t sleep, it was horrible. However, in the end, it all worked out. The interview went extremely well and I accepted the job offer. The job requires about 50% travel, but I get to stay in Ohio and work from home when not on the road. Win! I left my company of nearly 19 years and started this new adventure at the end of February.
The Mom: The Mom continued to have issues with her hip, which ultimately turned out to be her back, not her hip. After several months of different tests and doctors, we found out The Mom has spinal stenosis. Once we knew what we were dealing with, we were able to get correct treatment and The Mom is doing great!
The House: Because of the issues The Mom continued to have and because she now lives alone on the family farm, we decided that I would sell my house and build a new one out on the family farm next to her. This would prove to be a 4-month poop-show! I am extremely luck that The Mom has an unused apartment that I can stay in, rent free, with all 4 of my dogs and 3 of hers, while the new house is built. It’s tight quarters, but we’re making it work. Because it took longer than expected to sell my house, the new construction won’t start until spring of 2018.
Alaska – again: After our short trip to Alaska at the end of 2017, some family friend, The Mom, and I decided to make the long trip back up north! We did a “cruise tour”, 4 days on land and 7 days on a ship. It was truly amazing! We biked, hiked, kayaked, took trains and just generally had a ball!
Disney – again: The Mom and I were accompanied to Disney this year by my sister and her family, which included three small humans! We managed to keep the trip a total surprise for almost an entire year! The Mom, my sister and I all did the 5k event, which was a blast! In fact, this was one of the best trips we ever had, there were rides and water slides, shows, meals, a Princess makeover and really only one small human meltdown. It was fantastic!
The Holidays: The holidays this year were a little less festive than normal. I had no house to decorate, but my aunt provided me with a a mini tree for my tiny space. Roughly 20+ family members came down with the flu/colds between Christmas and New Year’s. I’m still struggling to recover from mine. We have a health crisis with a family member. There has also been an engagement and a move for one of my sisters.
So that brings us to now. As I’m sure some of you may have noticed, there were no triathlons in 2017 for me. Not only was there a lot of things going on in 2017, but I really had no desire to do a tri after the fiasco of 2016. I needed a break, but now it’s time to get going again. On the books for 2018 I have, a 12-hour max distance bike ride, two century rides, IMWI 70.3 Relay, IMOH 70.3, IMME 70.3 Relay, a trip to Kona as a volunteer and a return to the Disney Wine & Dine ½. So hold on tight, here we go again!
