Packing for this trip was like nothing I’ve ever done. I travel for a living and in general can be packed and ready to leave for a weeklong trip in about 15 minutes. Seriously, I have it down to a science. I only ever have one bag plus my backpack with my tablet in it. For this trip I felt like I was packing the entire house! I had to think about pre-race, the race and post-race. This included stuff for Saturday and hopefully a practice swim and a short bike ride. Then there was race day, I had spent a good deal of time prepping for race day, making a checklist (which I promptly lost) but I already had stuff laid out by leg of the race.
In the end I had my good backpack with clothes and toiletries, my laptop backpack which had my tablet and my Xbox (I need something to do with all the downtime over the next 2 days!) My race bag that had all my swim, bike and run crap in it, my large lunch box with a variety of pre-race and race day goodies. A pillow and blanket for the ride home and of course my bike on the rack.
I picked up the mom and we headed to KB’s place where she and MK were “decorating” the windows on MK’s car. Because MK is also known as the “Landshark” there was shark, chasing a swimmer on the back window (think Jaws). There were all kinds of drawings and encouraging sayings all over the windows. Once they had completed with her car, it was on to my Jeep. I also have a nickname, I am the Stingray, so naturally there was a stingray drawn on the back of my Jeep, which looked good until it got colored in with the pink marker, at which point it became a flying elephant (or something much less appropriate) The stingray/flying elephant was only outdone by the slightly psychotic vampire looking thing MK put on the side window! We have no idea what she was going for, but it was pretty damn funny!
The next 5 hours was spent cruising on the turnpike, jamming to tunes, dancing in the cars and generally having a good time. MK and KB got an up close and personal look at my fear of bridges, I “might” have slammed on my breaks while in front of them! Yes, I have a 100% irrational and uncontrollable fear of bridges!
We got checked in, found a cute little place for dinner and generally just chilled and relaxed. There was a little torture with a roller, if you don’t know what that’s like, have someone you love take a rolling pin to your legs, you’ll get the idea! We all got bright colored bracelets with things like turtles, owls and I think even skulls on them. MK and KB got me a killer T-rex lunch box, there were a lot of laughs! The weekend is off to a great start.
