My average day starts about 5:00am; my alarm goes off, my 4-legged children get extremely excited that mom is awake; I get up, feed the kids, pack my gym bag and my lunch and hit the gym. After the gym I go to work, after work I either go home (which is rare) go to the karate school, go to my best friend’s or got to the farm. I get home around 10:00, feed the kids again, eat dinner, finish laundry, go through the mail and go to bed around 11:30 – 12:00, sometimes later if I make the mistake of turning on the TV…Deadliest Catch is just so good!
I know what some of you are thinking, why don’t you pack your lunch and you gym bag the night before? The answer is simple, by the time I get home; I’m too damn tired to do much of anything. Turning on the TV isn’t really bad; the problem is sitting on the couch. Once I’m there I usually don’t have the energy to get back up and I can only sleep there for so long. On average I get about 4.5-5 hours of sleep a night.
I knew I was in trouble early yesterday, I had a pretty good workout, but I had to really push because I got to the gym late. By the time I got to my office I was ready for a nap. I can generally get through my morning with the help of a cup of coffee, not yesterday. Three cups later I was still nodding off at my desk, and on my lunch break and in a meeting and in the locker room at the karate school.
Thursdays are my long nights at the karate school, I have three classes. I managed to get through the first class ok, but by the second one I was completely dead on my feet. By the third class I was struggling to stay upright. And everything hurt, my knees were killing me, my back was so tight it hurt just to stand up straight and my recently repaired parts screamed.
I had to drive home with my window down. The fact that I was ravenous also helped keep me awake for the drive home. Once there I let my fuzzy children out to play and run for a few minutes while I got them dinner and made myself a sandwich. I also needed to finish some laundry for tomorrow; I think this was my undoing. While waiting for the washer to finish I sat down and watched Deadliest Catch, the washer was done long before the episode, but I was totally zoned out, all I cared about was if the crew of the burning ship got rescued (they did). By the time I crawled into bed it was nearly 1am.
I have no doubt that my alarm went off at 5am like usual, but my sleep deprived brain simply failed to forward the memo to the rest of my body. When I finally heard my alarm and opened my eyes I was met by the strangest sight…daylight! CRAP! When I saw the clock said 7:55 I nearly died! Actually I considered calling off work and going back to sleep! No, no, there would be no wasting of vacation time for a nap. The reality that I’d missed my workout hit me pretty quickly and as I ran around like a chicken with my head cut off, I was mentally trying to figure out how in the world I was going to fit in a swim workout today. (I still have no answer to that question) In my mad rush to get to work I forgot several things, like my gym bag, it is sitting nicely pack on the kitchen counter, and my lunch box, which is sitting completely unpacked on the kitchen counter. Even with no lunch, no workout and no gym bag, I feel pretty decent today; it’s amazing what a little extra sleep will do for ya.
